‘Corpo-Fantasma’ features artworks by Didier Fiúza Faustino and Mumtazz
Curated by Marta Espiridião, ‘Corpo-Fantasma’ runs in Leiria until the end of August
Corpo-Fantasma opened last week at Centro de Artes Villa Portela, also marking the reopening of the building after repairs following the damage caused by Storm Kristin. This exhibition is included in special program by CACE – Coleção de Arte Contemporânea do Estado, bringing together a selection of works by 28 Portuguese and international artists.
Curated by Marta Espiridião, Corpo-Fantasma uses the concept of a ‘ghost’ as a metaphor to examine themes of identity, appearance, presence, sensory perception and memory. It covers what gets to be manipulated within our bodies or to be perceived without being seen, much like the idea of a “phantom limb”.
The exhibition presents a non-linear journey highlighting the tension of the human body being absent or observable, immaterial or presented, existing in light or shadow. The works portray the body as a multifaceted entity, suggesting that consciousness can exist without matter.
The exhibition features artworks from represented artists by Galeria Nuno Centeno, Didier Fiúza Faustino and Mumtazz. It also includes Adriana Proganó, Ana Mata, Ana Mendieta, André Romão, António Dacosta, Belén Uriel, Bruno Zhu, Ção Pestana, Cindy Sherman, Félix González-Torres, Flávia Vieira, Gabriel Abrantes, Irene Buarque, Jaime Welsh, João Gabriel, Juliana Julieta, Lourdes Castro, Luisa Cunha, Maria José Palla, Mariko Mori, Mónica de Miranda, Patrícia Almeida, Rosa Carvalho, Salette Tavares, Sarah Lucas and Túlia Saldanha.
Corpo-Fantasma opened at Centro de Artes Villa Portela, on May 22nd and it will be on display until August 31st, 2026.
