Manuela Sedmach
Un altro passo
Featured Represented Artists:
Un altro passo is Manuela Sedmach’s second exhibition at Galeria Nuno Centeno, presenting 14 acrylic on canvas paintings, produced between 2009 and 2024.
Manuela Sedmach was born in Trieste in 1953. She began her career in the 1970s with numerous exhibitions in important galleries and museum spaces.
The subjects that populate Manuela Sedmach’s canvases are distant, indefinite, and unknowable places: mists and vapors, marine atmospheres, boundless horizons, deserts, cosmos, and stars. The artist transforms her paintings into testimonies of the essential, outlining indefinite landscapes wrapped in fog. She manages to create worlds and thoughts with few signs and colors looking for a dimension of inner freedom outside of homologation, freedom that can be expressed with a few strokes on the surface of a canvas.
The Italian artist, now based in Portugal, makes this exhibition Un altro passo, a juxtaposition of her practice in both countries. Here, you’ll find works produced in her home country, such as the atmospheric Tornare a casa (2009) and Heimlich (2012), as well as works with vegetal and liquid qualities, already made in Portugal. Ponte do Prado refers to a series of works based on contemplating the water of the Rio Cávado from this bridge in Vila Verde, Braga, over several days, weather conditions and seasons.
Manuela has collaborated with the Galleria Continua since 1991, exhibiting in San Gimignano, Les-Moulins, Paris, Beijing and Dubai galleries. Manuela Sedmach won numerous awards including the Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant, New York in 1999.
