– André Sousa
Produced between 2023 and 2025, these acrylic on canvas paintings evoke the notion of accident and sedimentation of such places. These waterfalls, which do not exist in reality, are places where André Sousa has spent time and to which he often returns.
The eighteen repetitions of the theme and the linear installation of the paintings suggest – in an almost redundant manner – the continuous fall of water. Similar to early cinema, some animation or Super 8 films, here too, the movement seems to be slower than in reality.
The fragmentation of time into an eighteenth of a second is countered by the suggestion of a sound that lasts beyond our presence – a pianist mimicking nature, an electronic drone, or a field recording.
André Sousa (b. 1980, Porto) lives and works in Porto and Frankfurt am Main. His paintings and installations start from a rigorous plan set to house the diversity of a diary practice. His body of work is mostly composed of double-sided paintings, contrasting aesthetics, confronting materials and techniques, reproductions of vernacular architecture, and other objects. In his paintings or videos, one finds landscapes, literary references, individual experiences, or codified elements and appropriations.
