André Sousa’s paintings and installations start from a rigorous plan set to house the diversity of a diary practice. His body of work is mostly composed of double sided paintings, contrasting aesthetics, confronting materials and technics, reproductions of vernacular architecture and other objects. In his paintings or videos one finds landscapes, literary references, individual experiences or codified elements and appropriations.
In The Bottom of the Waters exhibition, André Sousa presents a boardwalk and a group of paintings that turn the whole gallery space into a landscape. A forest around a lake, symbolic elements, statistical data or mythological places come together producing a warm ambient, though loaded with tension. The viewer is given the option to step into the water and reach the other margin.
