João Penalva presents ‘Uma Obra em Seis Partes’ across six venues in Lisbon
With ‘Um Puzzle Familiar’, audiences must collect six pieces to assemble the artist’s puzzle
Galerias Municipais de Lisboa and Atelier-Museu Júlio Pomar are presenting Um Puzzle Familiar by João Penalva as part of the 2026 project Uma Obra em Seis Partes.
Visitors are invited to collect six colored tokens from over six different venues, including Galeria Quadrum, Galeria da Boavista, Torreão Nascente da Cordoaria, Pavilhão Branco, Atelier-Museu Júlio Pomar, and Culturgest. Collecting these tokens requires a city-wide journey to obtain the full physical puzzle and experience the complete artwork. This project arises within the scope of the exhibitions that Culturgest, Galerias Municipais de Lisboa, and the Cinemateca are organizing around the Penalva’s work, including Culturgest’s Personagens e Intérpretes.
Curated by Sara Antónia Matos and Pedro Faro, Uma Obra em Seis Partes challenges audiences to navigate both the urban landscape and the act of assembly, reflecting on the nature of images through fragmented narratives. By engaging with these pieces, viewers are invited to explore the power of the fragment and determine the final interpretation of the work, blending artistic experience with personal engagement.
Uma Obra em Seis Partes opens at various locations across Lisbon from June 2nd to 28th. The instructions can be found in the project’s leaflet. Entry is free.
