Bairro Alto Hotel hosts ‘Névoa Vermelha da Noite’ by Maria Capelo until the end of July
Galeria Nuno Centeno is proud to announce a a first-ever collaboration with Bairro Alto Hotel, in Lisbon.
A dedicated space within Bairro Alto Hotel is hosting the exhibition Névoa Vermelha da Noite by the represented artist, Maria Capelo. Consisting of a set of four large-scale paintings of oil on canvas, these works were part of her previous critically acclaimed exhibition, entitled Sombras Rosas Sombras, displayed in 2025 at Sociedade Nacional de Belas Artes in Lisbon.
Maria Capelo continues to dedicate herself to the attentive observation of particular spaces, combining a variety of elements such as trees, hills, paths, mountains, and horizon lines into landscapes. She aims to render the incomprehensible experience of reality visible.
Maria Capelo (b. 1970, Lisbon), has exhibited regularly since 1996. Her artistic practice has gained consistent recognition due to her major recent exhibition, Sombras Rosas Sombras, at the Sociedade Nacional de Belas Artes, and by having won the FLAD Drawing Prize in 2022.
In 2024 she presented MAIO NESTE INVERNO at Galeria Nuno Centeno, an exhibition that followed Vem a chuva e vem o vento (CAV/Encontros de Fotografia, Coimbra, Portugal, 2023), O Dia já fecha as portas – MAAT – Lisbon, Portugal 2023), Vento Espesso (Museu da Cidade, Casa Guerra Junqueiro, Porto, Portugal, 2022), Do planalto se dobra a montanha (Palacete Viscondes de Balsemão, Porto, and Galeria Zé dos Bois, Lisbon, Portugal, 2022), As coisas do mundo são rocha (Pavilhão Branco, Lisbon, Portugal, 2019); Deita-te, levanta-te e agora deita-te (Fundação Carmona e Costa Foundation, Lisbon, Portugal, 2017). Her group exhibitions consist of Tudo o que eu quero – Portuguese Women Artists from 1900 to 2020 (Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian and CCOD, Lisbon and Tours, 2021-2022), Taking Root (KIT – Kunst im Tunnel, Düsseldorf, Germany, 2019), Pedro Costa: Companhia (Fundação Serralves, Porto, Portugal, 2018), and RE: Imagining Europe (BOX Freiraum, Berlin, Germany, 2017).
Her works are included in a variety of collections, notably the Coleção de Arte Contemporânea do Estado (Portugal), the Coleção de Arte Moderna e Contemporânea Norlinda and José Lima (Portugal), the Coleção de Arte da Fundação EDP (Portugal), and the Centro de Arte Moderna da Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian (Portugal).
The opening of Névoa Vermelha da Noite takes place on May 13th, 2026, at Bairro Alto Hotel. Visits will take place Tuesday to Saturday from 2pm to 7pm until July 31st.
